MRS. CLARA LEONA SPAIN-OWENS, {90} On Friday, February 23rd, 2018 around 1:54 pm, an angel came and beckoned Clara Leona Spain-Owens home to be with the Lord at Conway Medical Center surrounded by her family whom she loved. She was born on May 5, 1927 in Durham, NC to the late Oliver and Marie Bragdon-Spain. She was the granddaughter of Rev. Benjamin Bragdon {who was a well-known preacher all over Horry, Marion and Dillon Counties} and Laura Gilchrist was her maternal grandparents, who raised her until she was four {4} years old. Her mother, Marie B. Spain died when she was thirteen {13} months old. Clara attended K-2nd grade school in Durham, NC until the family moved to Conway, SC in 1935, then she was raised by her father, the late Mr. Oliver Spain and stepmother, the late Mrs. Elese Harvin-Spain. Nero and Susanna Spain of Conway, SC was her paternal grandparents who were farmers.

She attended Whittemore School from third {3rd} to eleventh{11th} grades and graduated. She attended Morris College in Sumpter, SC for one {1} year and transferred to South Carolina State in Orangeburg, SC receiving Certification in Social Studies. Later during Summer School, she received Certification for Elementary School with a minor in Guidance from Georgia State College. She took extensive courses from North Carolina A & T and Georgia State Colleges. She graduated with her masters degree from South Carolina University as the first {1st} Black Teacher in the Jamestown section of Conway, SC. She became a dedicated teacher and taught for thirty-five {35} years and then five {5} years substituting. She was inspired in kindergarten to become a teacher while living in Durham, NC. It ran in the maternal family to be educators and preachers. She taught so many in South Carolina, Britton Neck and Burgess.

Clara accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age and joined Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. She was a Charter Member of the church under the leadership of Rev. George Goings Daniels. She served her church as musician for the Youth and traveled to Sunday School Associations and Unions in Marion, Dillon and Horry Counties. She sang on the Musical, Chancel and the R.J. Daniels Choirs. She also served on the Pastor’s Aide and Missionary Ministries. She was a Daily Vacation Bible School Teacher, Musician, and faithful Sunday School member. Also, she played church music for Britton Neck Methodist, Hemmingway Chapel Methodist, Centerville Baptist of Centenary, SC, Friendship Missionary Baptist and Jerusalem Baptist Churches. Playing the piano and organ was one of her many hobbies. She loved flowers and had a green thumb at growing them. Gardening and picking fresh fruits and vegetables was what she always loved to do and distributed them to friends, family and neighbors.

She met and married the late Mr. Preston Joseph Owens of Bucksport, SC and they were blessed with a son, the late Oliver Wendell Spain Owens {Rebecca Owens of Chesapeake, VA}, a dedicated daughter, Clara Marie Owens-Wilson {Rev. Harris Wilson} and a devoted son, Preston Leon Owens {Connie Owens} of Conway, SC.

She was preceded in death by three {3} siblings, James Spain, Naomi McMillan and Ruby Eve.

She leaves to cherish her memories in addition to her children; five {5} grandchildren, Michelin, Shanae, Preston, Ebony and Shanice; five {5} step-grandchildren, Sharonda, Janie, Corey, Kaisha, Willis; five {5} great-grandchildren, Derrick, Christina, Jamiyah, Nevaeh and Preston; six {6} sisters-in-law, Almeta Ryan of Springfield, MA, Marthena {Edward} McCray of Columbia, SC, Ruth Maddox of El Paso, TX, Vermell Owens, Philadelphia, PA, Laura {Council} Pickett of Newport News, VA, Susie Owens of Conway, SC; one {1} brother-in-law, Joe Owens of Springfield, MA; two {2} nieces, Valerie Jordan and Gwendolyn Wilson; two {2} nephews, James McMillan and William Wilson; two {2} adopted grandchildren, Tamaria Johnson and LeBrianna Johnson. two {2} dedicated friends, Rev. William Simmons and Mr. Randolph Hudson; special friends, Ms. Hestella Johnson, Ms. Patril Bromell, Julia Miller-Smith; special cousins, Ms. Willa Mae Spain, Ms. Celia Gass, Edna S. Dewitt, Frankie Mae Butler and many other cousins by the dozens; a host of other loving relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held 6:00 – 8:00 PM Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at Ocean View Funeral Home Conway Chapel. Funeral Services will be held 1:00 Thursday, March 01, 2018 at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church.  Arrangements are entrusted to Ocean View Funeral Home Conway Chapel.
