MR. JOSEPH YOUNG, JR.

MR. JOSEPH YOUNG, JR. {74} was born in Georgetown, SC on January 15, 1944. He was the eighth child and fifth son of the late Joseph and Sylvia Young. He transitioned from his earthly home on Sunday, September 16, 2018.

The family relocated to Myrtle Beach, SC when he was eight {8} years old. He attended Carver Elementary School in Conway, SC where he excelled in football. A leg injury kept him from playing professionally.

Later, he relocated to New York City. During the day he worked and at night he attended college. Mr. Young graduated with honors and earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree. He studied various subjects related to education. For more than thirty {30} years, he was employed by the NYC Board of Education. The positions he held included high school social studies teacher, principal and licensed principal.

He wrote the first Black History Journal approved by the educational board to be utilized by various schools throughout the district. Mr. Young received numerous awards including the Malcolm X Award for outstanding community services and Teacher Of The Year. He was dedicated to the youth and senior citizens of his community. He created programs to feed the children and in return, they assisted him in giving baskets to the seniors at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

We will miss our brother, uncle, etc., but he had a full life. He traveled to Myrtle Beach every summer to visit his family and friends. Often, he spoke of how his sister Peggy made him laugh. Right now he is in the presence of his parents and siblings who preceded him in death. Now his brother Walter is making him laugh.

Joseph Young, Jr., leaves to cherish his memory a son, Joseph Dexter Young of Richmond, VA; daughter, Jamilia Sylvia Young of NYC; sisters, Helen Springer of NYC, Peggy Campbell of Conway, SC, Rebecca Young of Myrtle Beach, SC; brother, Larry Young of Myrtle Beach, SC, and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
