MR. JAMES ODELL HOLMES, {84}  “And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes: There shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying there shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” Rev. 21:4

Hush,hush somebody’s calling my name…..” At the sound of his name by the Almighty, James Odell Holmes took mortality and put on immortality on Monday, November 26, 2018.

James was born in the Burgess Community, March 1st, 1934 to the union of Jeff and Lessie Holmes. He was preceded in death by six {6} siblings. 

James’ parents instilled in him strong Christian values at an early age. He had a full and joyous life while here on earth. He was a loving and caring person that cared about everyone and cherished his family and friends. He graduated from Whittemore High School in Conway, SC. He served his Country in the United States Army {Korean War}. At an early age, he joined the Mt Zion AME Church Family and was a faithful member until his health declined. He served as a class leader, church treasurer, served on the steward board, and sung on the male choir.

James worked for Burroughs and Chapin Company {Myrtle Beach Pavilion} and retired after forty-five {45} years. He made every effort to make sure young people got summer jobs. After retirement, he enjoyed the opportunity to work another ten {10} years with Coast RTA. One of his past time activities was to meet up with friends at the local Hardees, and to make daily trips to Walmart.

James was joined for fifty-five {55} years in holy matrimony to Betty Holmes. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Theresa Sulton. He was blessed with seven {7} children: Barbara Hall {Donald} of High Point, NC, Reverend Michael Holmes {Lisa}, Christopher Holmes, Cynthia Holmes-Bovain all of Myrtle Beach, SC, Melissa Johnson {Wayne} of Chicago, Illinois, Alethia Busby {Charles} of Conway, SC, Kimberly Gary {Ron} of Surfside Beach, SC, and an adopted granddaughter, Angel Godbolt; nineteen {19} grandchildren and thirteen {13} great-grandchildren; one {1} sister, Ethel Mae Pompey of Troy, NY; one {1} brother-in-law, Henry Brown of Myrtle Beach, SC. He will be missed by one of his best friends, Alton Holmes and a host of loving nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, December 01, 2018 at Mt. Zion AME Church. Visitation will be held 6:00 – 8:00 PM Friday, November 30, 2018 at Ocean View Funeral Home Myrtle Beach Chapel. Arrangements are entrusted to Ocean View Funeral Home Myrtle Beach Chapel.
